Brent Hagenbuch's Failed Leadership

Statement by 76 Denton County Republican Party Leaders, Precinct Chairs, and Activists

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, comprise a significant battalion of the "grassroots army" keeping Texas red and conservative in one of our state's most strategic counties, Denton County.

We are precinct chairs, generous donors, election judges and clerks, and cheerful, tireless volunteers and activists. We have collectively knocked on millions of doors. We have phone-banked. We have registered voters. We have chaired state and local committees. We have traveled to Austin. Much of this we have done for conservative Republican policy goals.

We publicly declare our opposition to Brent Hagenbuch for the soon-to-be vacant state senate seat in SD30, after having witnessed Mr. Hagenbuch's failed tenure as vice chair and then chairman of the Denton County Republican Party.

  1. Mr. Hagenbuch, as a Denton County GOP officer and precinct chair, violated his sworn oath by making a generous donation to a known far-left Democrat in a local election in Little Elm. For this, Mr. Hagenbuch was officially sanctioned by the County Party.
  2. Mr. Hagenbuch won his 2022 election as County Chair because his mentor disqualified Mr. Hagenbuch's opponent. The controversial disqualification continues to be at the center of ongoing and prolonged litigation. Mr. Hagenbuch, then, never won a competitive race for county chair, and his "victory" was tainted from the beginning.
  3. Mr. Hagenbuch and his allies planned and funded a massive attempt to purge veteran, effective conservative precinct chairs and party leaders from the Denton County GOP. The campaign included sending defamatory text messages and other communications to precinct chairs' neighbors, recruiting opponents by falsely telling them that precinct chair positions were vacant when they were not, and falsely accusing conservative precinct chairs of being progressives. This set the stage for Mr. Hagenbuch's ultimate failure as chairman.
  4. Mr. Hagenbuch publicly and intemperately lashed out at our SD12 SREC members, the late Jill Glover and current SREC member David Wylie, accusing them both of "questionable integrity," and labeling Jill Glover as a "liar," because they politely disagreed with his misinterpretation of the County GOP bylaws. Ms. Glover and Mr. Wylie have been distinguished and instrumental leaders of the Texas GOP.
  5. Mr. Hagenbuch publicly attacked Republican Party of Texas Chairman Matt Rinaldi with unprovoked, sarcastic, insulting, unprofessional public emails.
  6. Mr. Hagenbuch inaccurately and publicly attacked a distinguished veteran Republican officer - a town official and president of a large and respected county conservative organization - as a "liar" in an email he sent to every county GOP chairman in Texas and to her fellow local Republicans. What kind of leader does this? But it fit into the pattern of intemperate, divisive, and unmeasured behavior for Brent Hagenbuch.
  7. Mr. Hagenbuch became known for sending rashly-worded, insulting, and caustic public emails with false accusations against various members of his own CEC. Rather than serve and lead, he openly dictated and bullied.
  8. Mr. Hagenbuch's brief and aborted term of office as Denton County Chair was highlighted by his cancellation of all further monthly County Executive Committee meetings shortly after he took office. No new precinct chairs could be sworn in. No business conducted. No discussion or fellowship by party members.
  9. Mr. Hagenbuch took credit for political gains in Denton County when the statistical evidence is that the most gains were made by veteran grassroots precinct chairs and volunteers who were the targets of Mr. Hagenbuch's wrath.
  10. Mr. Hagenbuch and his allies oversaw the creation of a Political Action Committee that has diverted critical funds from the County Party.
  11. The failure of his regime may be best seen by the fact that his preferred candidate to succeed him as County Chair, a man selected by Hagenbuch to chair the DCRP political affairs committee, promised to avoid "picking up Brent's fights or perpetuating his mistakes." Even this ally knew he needed to run away from Hagenbuch's record. Nevertheless, he was still soundly defeated as a repudiation of the divisive and ugly Hagenbuch chairmanship.

We are, therefore, not surprised that Mr. Hagenbuch has run into court trouble for attempting to gain elected office in a district where he apparently does not have residence. He has lived in SD12 for years, in a lavish estate he still owns. Now he has attempted to claim he lives in his company's office in SD30; then in a small nearby apartment. This is vintage Hagenbuch.

We are also not surprised that Mr. Hagenbuch has failed to appear for numerous candidate forums intended to give voters crucial information. This is also vintage Hagenbuch.

All of the above points can be well-documented. For the good of the Party - and perhaps, his own good - we cannot recommend Mr. Hagenbuch to represent SD30 in the influential body of the Texas Senate. We do not believe he can handle power or authority, and his efforts would be better directed elsewhere.
